What Happened?

According to the U.S. Department of Justice, Dr. Bhardwaj was charged with conspiracy to commit health care fraud and three counts of health care fraud in connection with an alleged $1.8 million home health care fraud scheme.

Prosecutors allege that Dr. Bhardwaj accepted referrals of Medicare beneficiaries from Detroit-area home health agencies and submitted approximately $1 million in false Medicare claims. Medicare allegedly paid approximately $249,000 on those claims. Prosecutors further allege that she falsely certified beneficiaries as homebound, allowing the agencies to submit approximately $790,000 in additional claims for medically unnecessary home health services.

The case was reported by CBS Detroit as part of a nationwide health care fraud investigation involving multiple Michigan providers.

Michigan’s Medicaid provider sanction list also identifies Dr. Bhardwaj as a physician and records a September 8, 2025 summary suspension by MDHHS-OIG.
