What Happened?
St. Joseph’s was one of six Michigan nursing facilities involved in a federal and state False Claims Act investigation concerning the quality of care provided to residents and claims submitted to Medicare and Michigan Medicaid.
According to the U.S. Department of Justice, the government alleged that the six facilities submitted claims for services that were grossly substandard or not provided, including allegations involving inadequate staffing, failure to properly prevent and treat infections, failure to prevent falls, and inadequate care for residents.
In June 2025, the facilities and related entities entered into a $4.5 million settlement with the United States and State of Michigan. The settlement also included a five-year Corporate Integrity Agreement requiring additional oversight of the facilities’ quality of care. The settlement resolved the allegations and was not a trial finding that every allegation was proven.
