Samer Youssef

Samer Youssef is a Michigan pharmacist who was convicted in federal court for his role in a multimillion-dollar health care fraud and money-laundering scheme involving expensive specialty prescription drugs.

What Happened?

According to the U.S. Department of Justice, Youssef was a pharmacist and the owner of pharmacies in Southeast Michigan. Prosecutors alleged that he worked with a physician and pharmacy technician to obtain expensive specialty medications through medically unnecessary prescriptions and then resell the drugs. The scheme involved prescriptions written in the names of Medicare beneficiaries and other individuals.

The federal indictment charged Youssef with conspiracy to commit health care fraud and multiple counts of health care fraud, as well as money laundering. Court records show that Youssef pleaded guilty in May 2024 to health care fraud and money laundering.

Youssef was later sentenced to 35 months in federal prison and ordered to pay approximately $5.6 million in restitution.
