Representing Those Harmed by Hair Relaxer Side Effects Nationwide

The Oliver Bell Group is currently representing individuals who were thought to be injured after using hair relaxer products. There is an ongoing class action lawsuit against L’Oréal and other cosmetic companies, seeking damages for those who have been harmed by these dangerous products.

Our attorney Cameron Bell has been appointed to the leadership committee in this litigation by Judge Rowland, and as such we are better suited to represent clients than firms simply advertising for claims.

In October of 2021 The National Institutes of Health (NIH) publishes a study reporting an association between the use of over-the-counter chemical hair relaxers/ straighteners and a higher risk of ovarian cancer.

Beginning in the Fall 2022 numerous hair relaxer lawsuits were filed, claiming that women who used the products were diagnosed with uterine cancer. A group of lawyers representing the plaintiffs filed a class action lawsuit. By the end of the year, multiple class action lawsuits and individual lawsuits were filed claiming that thousands of women have been diagnosed with uterine cancer after using chemical hair straightener products. These lawsuits name L’Oréal and other smaller cosmetic companies responsible.

At the start of 2023, the Multi District Litigation panel agreed to consolidate the hair relaxer lawsuits into a new MDL litigation in the Northern District of Illinois in Chicago, which has been assigned to the Honorable Mary Rowland.

The Study Showing Chemicals Responsible

A recently published study by the National Institute of Environmental Health & Sciences has shown that toxic chemicals in hair straighteners may increase the risk of uterine cancer. This risk may be more pronounced in Black and Hispanic women who are more likely to have received hair straightening treatments than other ethnic groups. The study showed that frequent use of hair straightening products may increase the risk of uterine cancer by two to three times. However, the risk was found to be increased somewhat even when only one treatment had been performed in the last 12 months.

Hair straighteners contain formaldehyde and formaldehyde-releasing chemicals, phthalates, parabens, and bisphenol-A along with other toxins which may be carcinogenic. Other studies have linked toxic chemicals to cancer in females including breast and endometrial cancer, but this is the first study that has confirmed a link to uterine cancer.
