Paul Matouka

Paul Matouka, a distinguished civil rights lawyer, currently serves as an associate attorney at the Oliver Bell Group. He holds the position of President of the Consumer Law Section for the State Bar of Michigan and is an active member of the Oakland Bar Association. Additionally, he has contributed publications to the Consumer Law Section of Michigan and Wayne State’s Law Journal, highlighting his commitment to legal scholarship. 

Born and raised just North of Detroit, Paul earned his undergraduate degree in environmental science and policy from Michigan State University. His early career included three summers fighting forest fires in Colorado for the Bureau of Land Management. These experiences, combined with various jobs and travel during off-seasons, provided him with a unique perspective on environmental and civil rights issues. 

Paul’s path to becoming a civil rights lawyer began at Wayne State University Law School, where his involvement in the Flint Water Crisis litigation underscored the vital connection between civil rights and environmental justice. During his time at Wayne State, he received a fellowship to study public international law in The Hague, further broadening his legal expertise. 

Following his graduation, Paul interned at a large international law firm before joining the Oliver Bell Group, where he found a professional home that encourages continuous growth and collaboration. This environment allows him to build strong, in-depth relationships with clients and actively participate in all phases of his cases. 

Paul’s diverse background in international arbitration, civil rights, and environmental law has profoundly shaped his approach as a civil rights lawyer. He is dedicated to standing up for those who have been wronged by powerful entities and believes in holding the state and corporations accountable for abuses of power. His passion for prison reform and the recognition of constitutional environmental rights drives his ongoing efforts to create a more just and humane legal system.
